Custom concrete crown forms built for massive tunnel project

Project: Devil’s Slide Tunnel – Custom Crown Forms Pacifica, California
UFP Plant: Thornton, California

Jared Hillier, concrete forming specialist, from Thornton, CA, helped a customer out of a hole when an entire forming system purchased from another company couldn’t be manufactured and delivered on time. The contractor needed UFP’s help for the Devil’s Slide Tunnel project, a twin-tunnel arrangement that will help reduce highway overflow traffic and create a shorter route. Each tunnel is more than 4,000 feet long.

When it was obvious that the first company could not come through for the project, the customer approached Jared with two design pictures and asked UFP to build the forms. After 22 forms were delivered, the customer called with a rush order for 11 more—all manufactured in less than a week.

Jared and his team at the Thornton plant worked with UFP’s Engineering Department to design and manufacture a custom form. The customer was pleased with UFP’s excellent service, fast reactions and turnaround, and with the quality of the forms.

This is one example of how Universal Forest Products helps customers take form, pour after pour.

Why do concrete slabs curl or warp?

Monday, March 21, 2011 / 0 Comments »

Concrete slabs curl due to the effects of temperature variation between opposing surfaces of the slab. Concrete slabs may curl when the top surface of the slab is cooler than the bottom surface. The cool surface shortens due to thermal shrinkage, which may deform the perimeter of the slab section upward as the temperature of the bottom surface of the slab stays at a higher temperature. On the other hand, the top surface will expand when it is heated (such as with intense sunlight), which may relax curling or cause reverse curling. Reverse curling is when the concrete slab deforms downward instead of upward.

Concrete slabs warp due the effects of moisture variation between opposing surfaces of the slab. As the top surface of the slab dries, the volume change causes the surface to shorten while the bottom of the slab stays moist. Because the bottom surface stays moist, there is little or no shortening due to the effects of drying. Again as the top surface of the slab shortens and the bottom surface does not the edges lift.

Concrete Hydration
UltraCure wet curing blankets have UltraCure NCF for slab on grade applicationsnumerous advantages in preventing slab curling and warping. First is has deep hydration capability. When properly installed, the UltraCure blanket provides a fully saturated surface, helping the concrete to achieve more complete hydration at the surface than other products. Unlike other single-use blankets which tend to dry out after 3-4 days, UltraCure NCF (Natural Cellulose Fabric) provides constant hydration and maintains a 100% relative humidity condition on the slab for the entire 7-day curing period (with proper installation).

Secondly, this wet curing blanket feature non-staining, super absorbent fibers that effectively trap water and serve as a hydrating reservoir for the slab as it cures, reducing moisture loss at the surface which can lead to curling.

UltraCure NCF also features a semi-transparent white poly backing, which provides constant visual reinforcement that the slab remains wet for the entire curing period. The poly backing retards evaporation from heat and wind, both of which can lead to curling at the edges of the slab.

Lastly, the superior water retention ability of UltraCure NCF allows the blanket to absorb more than 46 gallons of curing water per 1,600 sq. ft. roll, providing the critical moisture required for the long term wet curing of concrete surfaces. With typical application and proper installation, the superior absorbency demonstrated by UltraCure NCF means there's no need to re-wet the slab. UltraCure NCF is designed to stay wet, lay flat and reduce moisture loss.

EZdowel load transfer system meets new 2010 ACI 360 guidelines

Wednesday, July 21, 2010 / 0 Comments »
The 2010 ACI 360 Guide to Design of Slabs on Ground has been released and, as in EZdowel provides superior strength and perfect alignmentthe past, the guide becomes the primary design and product specification tool for architects, designers, owners and contractors. Making sure that your project meets the new guidelines is critical - especially from a liability standpoint. When issues occur on a concrete floor or pavement, and litigation is the means to settle differences, the ACI 360 document becomes very important, as it will be the standard that legal consul and expert witnesses refer to. What if your project does not meet the new guidelines? How much liability you can afford to assume?

In chapter 6 on Joints, you’ll find new criteria for slab-on-ground construction to limit vertical defection of joints in concrete floors. Chapter 6 also includes criteria for defining the acceptable limits on joint deflection plus providing the designer with performance guidelines on specifying load transfer devices in areas of the slab subjected to wheeled traffic, heavy loads or both. The new guidelines offer key language that provides direction for designers to specify methods and materials to the contractor during a construction project.

EZdowel provides superior plate dowel strengthAbout EZdowel load transfer system
The patent pending EZdowel is part of the EZ Form® system designed for construction and contraction joints. EZdowel provides superior load transfer while saving time and labor during the installation process. Each plate dowel is coated to create a bond break with the slab, and compressible edge banding on both sides to allow the slab to move laterally.

The EZdowel system, manufactured by McTech Group and distributed exclusively by Universal Forest Products, will help your flooring or pavement design achieve top performance, and provide you with the confidence that you're meeting the latest ACI design criteria.

Since the EZdowel is a “direct contact” dowel, there are no plastic pocket formers which remain in the slab (common in other brands). Plastic could possibly crack, or compress under load, which could allow deflection. Direct Contact: “Load transfer devices in direct contact with the concrete will be the most effective load transfer mechanism for controlling vertical joint deflection”. - ACI 360 (6.1.2) EZdowel is the only plate dowel on the market that has 100% direct contact with the concrete on top and bottom of the dowel. EZdowel has 100% more direct steel surface to concrete contact than any other competitor.

Custom Precast Concrete Stair Forms

Custom-designed Precast Project Details

A West Michigan company that specializes in specialty pre-cast products was looking for a new design idea for a poured, pre-cast staircase to be used in a 256-space parking garage. The company typically purchases precast stairs from specialty pre-cast shops. Universal Forest Products not only provided the customer with the custom design it needed for this one-of-a-kind job, but supplied release agent, pre-engineered truss frames, CNC-routed stair stringers and plywood.

This custom precast project is the first for which the company manufactured its own stair sets. UFP impressed the customer with design work and with service.

This is one example of how Universal Forest Products helps customers take form, pour after pour.
