I had the Koa capricorn decking installed last week. lokks great but the dog scratches it with his teos nails. Can/How do you remove them. His nails were immediately trimmed. Can gouges get repaired or covered?
Wednesday, July 1, 2009 by Chris Fox:
If you’ve marred your Capricorn decking, it should fade over time. Because Capricorn will scratch and mar just like wood or any other composite decking, we recommend installing pads on outdoor furniture. Capricorn decking features a reversible woodgrain finish. So, in the unlikely event the durable polyethylene surface has been damaged beyond repair, flip the board over and reinstall. We like our Trex deck but after 6 mo the mold &/or meldew spots are unsitely. How is this cleaned & prevented.
Wednesday, September 23, 2009 by Chris Fox:
As noted in my recent blog post “Care and cleaning for composite decking”, mold may form on any surface where moisture is prevalent, there is heavy shading, or where pollen and debris are allowed to collect. With that said, I recommend using a conventional deck cleaner that contains sodium percarbonate—do not use bleach. I also recommend that you first contact the dealer you purchased your deck materials from and discuss their recommendation. In addition, there are spray on chemicals promoted to defend against mold on surfaces like composite decking, such as MoldOff and Wet and Forget.

Why are Latitudes Fascia boards unavailable where the decking is sold?
Thursday, November 5, 2009 by Chris Fox:
Latitudes deck fascia is available anywhere Latitudes composite decking is sold. However, it might only be sold as a special order item at your lumber dealer.

I am considering using 4 different fastening systems which ones of these are ok to use in all your different decking materials for grooved hidden fastening and top down installations so I will not void the warranty. • UFO Ballistic NailScrews www.911-nails.com • Mantis clip for grooved using The Eliminator with UFO Ballistic NailScrews www.howtonailscrew.com • Hidden link for non grooved http://www.suredrive.com/hidden_deck_fasteners.htm • HID FAST system www.hidfast.com Thanks in advance for your quick reply Blitz@cox.net

Beverly, the recommended fastener for our Latitudes grooved composite decking is the Equator hidden fastener (http://www.ufpi.com/product/equator) as it is designed specifically for Latitudes composite decking. If the fasteners you mention work with the profile of our grooved deck board as well as fit a 5/32” slot, and allow for the natural expansion of composite materials, they should do just fine. Provided the person installing your deck follows the Latitudes installation instructions (http://www.ufpi.com/product/latitudes/planandinstall/installation.htm) properly, the warranty should not be voided. If you are looking to secure the boards without hidden fasteners (face-mount application), we recommend using 2-1/2” corrosion-resistant, composite wood deck screws. We do not recommend the use of nails to install the composite deck boards. For best results when using screws, always pre-drill a pilot hole and countersink the fastener. Also, it is required that a pilot hole is drilled when a face-mount composite screw is within 1-1/2” from the composite board ends.

i used your product to build a patio 2 yrs ago.now im residing my home and the sider and i decided to use your product to trim all the windows doors and to spilt the siding from the stucco.it looks amazing(should take pics for your site) but the problem i have is that the new product on the home is great but the patio looks old and faded now(is thier a way to clean or restore the product?) please help thx

Tim, with all standard composite decking, there will be fading. Over time, the trim on your windows should fade to a similar shade as the deck. I've often seen this on new siding that has been replaced, and it too fades to the same color as the older siding over time. I do not recommend using any composite stains or enhancers to alter the shade/color. I suggest that you give your deck a thorough cleaning and that should help. See my blogs on mold/mildew prevention and composite cleaning chemicals. http://blog.ufpi.com/blog/universal-forest-products/0/0/preventing-mold-and-mildew-growth-on-composite-decking-v2 http://blog.ufpi.com/blog/universal-forest-products/0/0/common-deck-cleaning-chemicals
