I am a local Deck Builder here in Calgary, Alberta. I was wondering how I could get pricing on your Step Light Kit? Is there a retailer or provider in my area?

Your assistance is appreciated.

Paul.

Paul, you can get pricing on the Deckorators recessed Step/Stair Deck Light Kit by locating a retailer in your area. Go to the Deckorators.com web site and under the "Where to Buy" you will need to select "Connectors & Accessories" than choose your location from the drop down menu. There are several dealers listed under Alberta, Canada.

I live in the Ann Arbor , MI area and would like to find a dealer that sells your balusters. When I did a search in the US, I got a dealer listed in TN.

Jan, often times when visitors enter their zip code / postal code they accidentally type in the wrong number. I entered a Ann Arbor zip code and found several dealers in the area that sell Deckorators balusters.

My husband and I built a 16x20 deck on the back of our house. We wanted more of a porch feeling rather than a deck as it is very low to the ground. But now I think i want a decorative railing on the sides of the deck with a full length step in the front. I do not have 4x4 sticking up through the deck boards..Any ideas on attaching a railing? Thank you...Holly C.

Thanks for the question Holly. You have a few deck railing options based on what you outlined. As long as your wood deck or composite deck is close to grade (less than 18-inches off the ground) you probably will not be required to have a building code compliant railing known as a “Guard Rail”. Typically one would install 6-foot railings, but you could also use less common 8-foot railings; either way, you’ll need three 4x4 or 6x6 pressure treated wood posts secured on each side of your deck structure. You can secure each post by notching out a deck plank (in three locations based on the railing length-six or eight foot on center) with a jigsaw and fasten through the rim joist (outer 2X6 - 2X12 that runs the perimeter of your deck) with two galvanized carriage / lag bolts into each post. Fasten the bolts tightly using compatible washers and nuts on each on the inside. You can fasten the 4X4 or 6x6 pressure treated wood posts on the outside of your rim joist without having to cut any deck boards; simply notch the base of the post, pre-drill two pilot holes and screw in two lag bolts through the rim joist. Over time this method may allow the railing to wobble especially if people lean on the railing. Either way you choose, Deckorators has a great aluminum deck railing system and compatible infill baluster as well as post caps from you to choose from.
